A considerable health burden is associated with metabolic impairment due to the high risk of cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. Metabolic impairment has long been recognized to induce a state of chronic low-grade inflammation, triggering cardiovascular dysfunction. In the same context, diet remains a main modulator of colonic microbiota with western-type, calorie-dense diets driving an imbalance of microorganisms in the gut known as dysbiosis. A major challenge in cardiometabolic disease management is that the deleterious pathological process appears to start much earlier than the initial diagnostic markers of metabolic impairment such as hyperglycemia and overt increases in adiposity. Recent research implicated localized inflammatory changes in select adipose depots as a driver of the earliest pathological transformation in cardiovascular tissues/organs in prediabetes without systemic involvement. Importantly, dysbiosis was suggested to augment the inflammatory phenotype in adipose tissue, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Program

In this conference, we will present a series of sessions that describe the early molecular changes in the localized adipose depots that are associated with cardiovascular dysfunction, particularly pertaining to mitochondrial function. We will demonstrate the potential pathways through which colonic flora can alter the host mitochondria leading to the observed alterations. Moreover, we will show how functional metabolomic studies on colonic microbiota under different conditions could lead to the development of novel therapeutic tools to manage this early cardiovascular impairment by modulating the interaction between dysbiosis and adipose tissue inflammation. 

The proposed sessions will feature leaders in the field from Germany, Spain, and the Middle East in addition to trainee and mid-career speakers.
