NIH Seeks Applicants for Key Leadership Roles
By: Yvette SegerThursday, November 13, 2025
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) seeks applicants for eight key leadership positions, including Director positions for six Institutes and Centers (I/Cs). A vacancy of particular importance to the FASEB community is the Director of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), a role vacated when the previous incumbent, Jon Lorsch, PhD, was named Deputy Director for Extramural Research within the NIH Office of the Director in September.
NIGMS plays a key role not only in supporting research exploring foundational concepts of biology but also in the development of the next generation of researchers through programs that foster scientific education and doctoral and postdoctoral training. The NIGMS Director serves as the chief visionary for the Institute and works collaboratively within the Institute, across NIH, and with external entities to generate, gain commitment for, and accomplish NIGMS goals. To carry out its mission, NIGMS is supported by a staff of approximately 220 employees and an annual budget of approximately $3.2 billion.
Additional information about the NIGMS Director role and other open positions is available on the NIH website. Applications will be accepted through November 21, 2025.
